By default, zombies in Minecraft can break almost any door, and the only limiting factor is how long it takes them to do it. This means players aren’t fully protected if a key storage area or entrance is just behind a single door. If you want to change this mechanic, you can now distract zombies by placing torches. We found a mod that makes them actively seek out and destroy such items. This opens up new possibilities for traps, defenses, and creative gameplay. Ready to try it out?
The Zombies Hates Light mod enhances zombie behavior so that they react to torches and attempt to destroy them in any dimension or biome. When a zombie spots a light source, it will move toward it and try to break it. How you use this mechanic is up to you — in our review, we explored several creative ideas. Screenshots show zombies hitting torches in groups, which looks both funny and fascinating.
Torches are now treated as objects zombies actively try to destroy. This applies whether you placed them manually or they were already in the world. The mod doesn’t stop at torches — it also works with other light sources like Redstone lamps, street lamps, and campfires. All zombies, regardless of size, react the same way. By default, zombies target a specific list of items, but you can edit this in the configuration file to add or remove objects.
So, what are the practical uses of Zombies Hates Light?
This is a simple yet versatile mod. There are countless ways to use it, from fun experiments to fully designed challenge maps. You can even modify the configuration file to include custom blocks from vanilla or other mods, making zombies react to virtually any object. Changes are applied via the intemble_blocks
section and require a restart of the mod and world.
Important: Zombie spawning mechanics are slightly altered. For example, placing a torch on a spawner will no longer prevent zombies from spawning, as they may destroy the torch and resume spawning nearby. Zombies can now appear in dark corners and move toward the nearest light source, making survival more dynamic and challenging.
Overall, Zombies Hates Light is a fun and functional mod that adds new gameplay options. It’s perfect for adventure maps, traps, or creating dynamic environments without complex AI systems. If you already use similar mods, share in the comments which ones you use and how they enhance your Minecraft experience — this mod works well in both single-player and server worlds.
